Abstract

This study aims to analyze the interpretation of Qur’anic verses and Prophetic traditions concerning zakat, particularly the exegesis of QS. At-Taubah: 103 and selected hadiths. Using a qualitative-descriptive approach with content analysis based on classical tafsir and hadith commentaries, the study explores the spiritual and socio-economic functions of zakat. The findings show that zakat is not merely an individual obligation but also a systematic mechanism for wealth redistribution. The Qur’an emphasizes zakat’s dual role in purifying wealth and souls, while hadiths highlight its position as a pillar of Islam with vertical (devotional) and horizontal (social economic) dimensions. Challenges in zakat management in Indonesia include weak institutional governance, lack of transparency, and suboptimal productive distribution. From these findings, it is concluded that zakat plays a strategic role in fostering social welfare and economic equity when managed effectively and in accordance with Islamic principles.
