Marriage is a sacred bond for individuals who wish to build a household and is also considered a sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). In many regions of Indonesia, wedding ceremonies are accompanied by various local traditions. One such tradition exists among the Madurese community in Sungai Rasau Village, namely the practice of giving uang asap prior to marriage. This study aims to examine the relationship between the uang asap tradition and the implementation of marriage, as well as to analyze its legal status from the perspective of Islamic law. This research employs a field research method with a phenomenological approach in order to understand the social practices within the community. The findings show that uang asap refers to a sum of money given by the groom to the bride based on a mutual agreement between both parties. This payment is usually made approximately 20 days before the wedding reception, with the commonly agreed minimum amount being around IDR 15,000,000. From the perspective of Islamic law, the practice of giving uang asap is generally considered mubah (permissible). However, when it becomes a widely accepted and practiced custom within a community, it can be categorized as ‘urf shahih, a valid custom that may be considered in legal reasoning as long as it does not contradict the fundamental principles of Islamic law.
