Abstract

Zakat is a fundamental pillar of Islam that functions not only as a religious obligation but also as a comprehensive social and economic instrument. This paper explores the concept, functions, and legal basis of zakat as derived from the Qur’an and Hadith, while emphasizing its relevance in contemporary society. Zakat serves as a means of purifying wealth and the soul, as well as a fair mechanism for wealth distribution aimed at reducing social inequality. From an economic perspective, zakat plays a vital role in income redistribution, community empowerment, and collective welfare development. The study also highlights a case of zakat fund misappropriation in Aceh Tengah, illustrating the challenges of implementation and the urgent need for transparency, strong supervision, integrity of zakat managers, and public participation. The analysis indicates that optimal zakat management can provide concrete solutions to poverty alleviation and economic disparity, provided it is supported by effective regulations, accountability systems, and communal awareness. Therefore, zakat should be understood not merely as an individual duty, but as a strategic instrument within the Islamic economic system that demands integrity, justice, and sustainability.
