The study of muhkam and mutashabih is one of the controversial topics in the field of Qur’anic exegesis. Muhkam and mutashabih are terms that refer to the clarity and ambiguity of meaning within the Qur’an. This research is a comparative study using a descriptive-analytical method aimed at explaining and comparing the views of two contemporary scholars, Muhammad Shahrur and Nasr Hamid Abu Zayd, on the concepts of muhkam and mutashabih. The findings of this study show that Shahrur defines muhkam as legal verses found in the umm al-kitāb, and mutashabih as symbolic verses and verses that explain or separate the structural divisions of the mushaf. In contrast, Abu Zayd views muhkam as clear and decisive verses that require no interpretation, while mutashabih refers to ambiguous verses that necessitate interpretation. These two figures offer contrasting perspectives on muhkam and mutashabih: Shahrur adopts a stricter distinction between fixed laws and flexible interpretation, whereas Abu Zayd proposes a more dynamic approach to understanding the entire Qur’anic text within ever-changing contexts. This approach reflects the Qur’an’s continuing relevance in addressing the challenges of contemporary times.
